5 Ways That Owning a Gym Changed my Life

5 ways owning a gym changed my life.

Three and a half years ago, I took a leap.  I opened CrossFit Aestus.  It was a chance; a big risk, but one that I had wanted to take for a long time.  I knew it would change me.  I just didn’t know how much.  Here are 5 ways that building CFA changed my life.

  • Being present:

This was a big one.  For me in the past it’s been easy to be in a conversation or spending time with my family, friends or at work and get lost in thought about something that “needs to be done”.  When CFA opened, I realized that the people who came there were looking for change and needed to not only “workout” but be heard as well.  They opened up their lives to me so they could be helped.  I realized at that point that I needed to be present at all times regardless of who I was with or what I was doing.

  • Family time:

On June 1, 2015, my 40 hour weeks suddenly became 80+ hour weeks.  Hours not at CFA became dedicated to building CFA.  Time with my family suddenly became a premium.  So a dinner together, a few minutes of conversation, date night or a car ride to an activity for my girls became small opportunities to talk, bond and enjoy.

  • Maximizing Minutes

Ben Bergeron’s Book: “Chasing Excellence” talks about maximizing minutes.  Basically this means taking full advantage of the time available and being as effective as possible within that time.  Making CFA into place that people see as the foundation to reach their goals is a challenge.  So when the alarm clock rings at 4am, each minute of my day needs purpose behind it.

  • Fulfillment: After years of working in the “real world”, fulfillment at work seemed to be a luxury.  Not anymore.  Everyday I walk into a place where I have the opportunity to not only lift others up, but have them lift me up as well.  I smile more often. I’m a better Husband and Father.  I take care of my body. I get many daily chances to help others.  To get to do all of these things is truly a blessing.

  • Changing Lives:

Full disclosure: The first time I heard “You changed my life”, it was more than a little unsettling.  Is this really something I’m capable of doing?  The answer is yes.  We all are.  I just have a cool little space to do it in called CrossFit Aestus.  That is what we do: Create an environment for people to find success and support from not only me but from their CFA family members as well.  The responsibility and weight of this is not lost on me.  I hold it close to my heart.  It builds me as much as it builds our members.  Hard work truly pays off, and we see it every day at CFA.
